NASA에서 공식적으로 제공한 설명을 보시죠. By starlight this eerie visage shines in the dark, a crooked profile evoking its popular name, the Witch Head Nebula. In fact, this entrancing telescopic portrait gives the impression that the witch has fixed her gaze on Orion's bright supergiant star Rigel. More formally known as IC 2118, the Witch Head Nebula spans about 50 light-years and is composed of interstellar dust grains reflecting Rigel's starlight. The blue color of the Witch Head Nebula and of the dust surrounding Rigel is caused not only by Rigel's intense blue starlight but because the dust grains scatter blue light more efficiently than red. The same physical process causes Earth's daytime sky to appear blue, although the scatterers in Earth's atmosphere are molecules of nitrogen and oxygen. Rigel, the Witch Head Nebula, and gas and dust that surrounds them lie about 800 light-years away. 별빛으로 이 섬뜩한 모습은 어둠 속에서 빛을 발하며, 마녀 머리 성운이라는 유명한 이름을 연상시키는 비뚤어진 프로필입니다. 사실, 이 매혹적인 망원경 초상화는 마녀가 오리온의 밝은 초거성 별 리겔에게 시선을 고정시켰다는 인상을 준다. 공식적으로 IC 2118로 알려진 마녀 머리 성운은 약 50광년에 걸쳐 있으며 리겔의 별빛을 반사하는 성간 먼지 입자로 이루어져 있다. 마녀 머리 성운의 푸른색과 리겔 주변의 먼지는 리겔의 강렬한 푸른 별빛 때문만이 아니라 먼지 알갱이가 붉은색보다 푸른빛을 더 잘 산란시키기 때문이다. 지구 대기의 산란기는 질소와 산소의 분자이지만, 동일한 물리적 과정은 지구의 낮 하늘이 파랗게 보이도록 한다. 리겔, 마녀 머리 성운, 그리고 그들을 둘러싸고 있는 가스와 먼지는 약 800광년 떨어져 있습니다. 우주의 다양한 모습은 아름답습니다~
