우선, 사진부터 감상하시죠! 이 멋진 사진의 제목은 The Medusa Nebula 입니다.
NASA에서 공식적으로 제공한 설명을 보시죠. Braided and serpentine filaments of glowing gas suggest this nebula's popular name, The Medusa Nebula. Also known as Abell 21, this Medusa is an old planetary nebula some 1,500 light-years away in the constellation Gemini. Like its mythological namesake, the nebula is associated with a dramatic transformation. The planetary nebula phase represents a final stage in the evolution of low mass stars like the sun as they transform themselves from red giants to hot white dwarf stars and in the process shrug off their outer layers. Ultraviolet radiation from the hot star powers the nebular glow. The Medusa's transforming star is the faint one near the center of the overall bright crescent shape. In this deep telescopic view, fainter filaments clearly extend above and left of the bright crescent region. The Medusa Nebula is estimated to be over 4 light-years across. 반짝이는 가스로 이루어진 편조된 뱀 모양의 필라멘트는 이 성운의 유명한 이름인 메두사 성운을 암시합니다. Abell 21로도 알려진 이 메두사는 쌍둥이자리에서 약 1,500광년 떨어진 오래된 행성상 성운입니다. 신화적인 이름처럼, 성운은 극적인 변화와 관련이 있습니다. 행성상 성운 단계는 태양과 같은 낮은 질량의 별들이 적색 거성에서 뜨거운 백색 왜성으로 변모하고 그 과정에서 외부 층이 벗겨지는 진화의 마지막 단계를 나타냅니다. 뜨거운 별에서 나오는 자외선이 성운의 빛을 증가시킨다. 메두사의 변신하는 별은 전체적으로 밝은 초승달 모양의 중심 부근에 있는 희미한 별이다. 이 깊은 망원경으로 보면 밝은 초승달 영역의 위나 왼쪽으로 더 희미한 필라멘트가 선명하게 뻗어 있습니다. 메두사 성운의 지름은 4광년 이상으로 추정된다. 우주의 다양한 모습은 아름답습니다~
